Metro Bike Sharing

Dan Miller created the topic: Metro Bike Sharing
I recently attended the Fall Corporate Bike Forum sponsored by Bike MN. One of their presentations was on bike sharing and changes that will be coming to the existing Nice Ride program. Under discussion is expanding the current program by adding a smart bike or possibly a dock-less system where you access the bike by phone. Like AirBNB, Uber and Cars to Go, this is coming faster than standard transportation planning practices for Minneapolis and the metro area. It is likely to take us by surprise both for the better and possibly the worse. There is an upcoming meeting to discuss these changes. I have attached announcements found on the Nice Ride web page and a facebook posting of the event. Please consider attending.

Hear Competing Visions for Bike Share Transition in the Twin Cities
Posted Oct. 25, 2017 by Bill Dossett
In August, Nice Ride published a Request for Proposals for Transition of the Twin Cities Bike Sharing System, seeking entrepreneurs with a vision to make bike share bigger, better, cheaper, and more convenient through a privately-funded, dockless model.  We also want to make sure bike sharing will continue to thrive after the venture-capital boom ends, so we asked for transition proposals, not abandon-and-replace proposals.  We received six proposals from established companies and start-ups from around the globe.  Our evaluation committee has selected two finalists, LimeBike and Motivate.
Our Streets Minneapolis and the St. Paul Bike Coalition will host a public meeting for everyone to meet with our finalists and hear their visions for bike share.  Join us on Monday, November 6, from 7-8:30pm at the John B. Davis Lecture Hall in the Campus Center at Macalester College.   Comment on these visions by sending an e-mail to  before 5pm on the November 7th.  Your comments will be shared will all participants of the evaluation committee.

Finalists’ Visions for the Future of Bike Share
Posted on
On November 6, at Macalester College's John B. Davis Lecture Hall in the Campus Center, join Our Streets Minneapolis and the Saint Paul Bicycle Coalition for a free public meeting and Q&A with LimeBike and Motivate!

These two companies are the finalists in Nice Ride Minnesota's search for entrepreneurs to make bike share bigger, better, cheaper and more convenient in the Twin Cities, through a privately funded dockless model. At this community conversation, they will each present their vision for the future of MSP bike share and answer your questions!

Nice Ride’s goal in this search has been to ensure that bike sharing will continue to thrive after the venture capital boom ends, so they asked for transition proposals, not abandon-and- replace proposals, and received six from established companies and start-ups worldwide.
