The President’s Column
By Charles Breer

It was great to see so many fellow TCBC members and their guests at the recent Annual Recognition Dinner at the Sheraton Bloomington. The banquet committee, spearheaded by Kristine Poelzer for the dinner and Mary Derks for the awards, did a terrific job and the banquet’s success was the result of a ton of hard work.

I don’t know about you, but having the banquet on a Friday evening was a nice way to save the weekend for other things, even if it took some patience to get there in the evening rush hour. For me, the other things included TCBC rides on both Saturday and Sunday following the banquet. I continue to be amazed by how many of us are showing up for the TCBC winter rides. This is no doubt helped by the mild temps we’ve had so far this season, but it can still feel pretty cold when it’s in the 20’s or 30’s, especially in the first 10 minutes or so.

I encourage more of you to give winter riding a try – it can be very invigorating and we tend to have a more social time. It’s also a nice feeling after riding heavy mountain bikes all winter to have that first ride on skinny tires, which makes you feel fast indeed. Those of you lucky enough to join one of the club’s California rides this winter will enjoy this feeling sooner.

Something that became clear to me at the banquet is that TCBC members are an active bunch. It seems that the number of club rides, number of riders and the miles we all rode, continue to remain in record-high territory, with a broadening variety of rides, too. Then, when you look at our fine ride leaders who go to amazing lengths to bring us so many great rides, I think we should be grateful for their incredible dedication – all on a volunteer basis, of course. I’m confident that the upcoming season will also offer a wonderful selection of rides, so I encourage those ride leaders out there (and prospective ride leaders) to start thinking now about where you would like to take us.

In the meantime, I look forward to seeing many more of you on upcoming rides, and to meeting new members and riders for the first time.

Winter Lardology
By Marina Lim

The winter weight gain. You know about that. All those calories you get to consume when cycling in the summer suddenly turn on you in the winter months and turn into….well…body fat.

Many of us attempt to stay fit in the winter by doing some cross country skiing. The hardcore winter riders have it down right. They keep riding, or do they ride and freeze? Regardless, they probably don’t have the weight gain problem. For others, the reality of course, is that 45 minutes on the treadmill or elliptical machine at the gym is nothing compared to the intensity of a 2-3 hour club ride (Okay, B ride and higher). Do you ski as often as you would be riding? Probably not, and the eating…

Since last spring I have been going to Caribou Coffee 2 to 3 times a week. It’s mostly a relaxation thing. Some time to myself, a tasty hot or cold drink in pleasant and familiar surroundings. One day it occurred to me I should find out how many calories those medium decaf mint condition drinks have. I figured each drink has about 225 calories (LOL). I called a store to check on the number of calories. Their computer was down so I went to their website. Much to my dismay I learned that my favorite drink has a 600 whopping calories. In the summer I could burn up the calories. Not in winter. No wonder I am packing on the flab.

Worse, last November Caribou had a bonus offer. Load up a gift card with $25 and get a free drink. Any drink. I reloaded 2 gift cards which I use myself. The server asked “Are you sure you don’t want a large? It’s free.” Well, I should have avoided the coffee shop altogether. I order decaf drinks because I don’t even drink coffee in the first place (no caffeine addition here). At any rate, my weight and fat maintenance caloric intake is 1400 per day. My standard lunch is 400 calories, and a drink is 600? It’s like drinking 1 ½ extra meals in a day. (For most people an extra intake of 3500 calories results in a weight gain of 1 pound). The two gift cards have been put away and won’t be used until this summer.

I made a list of foods to give up starting right now. It is a lifetime list which means I get to look at the food but not eat it anymore. The reminder card on my desk says: d/c (discontinue) from diet: lop cheung (a high fat Chinese sausage, usually eaten with globs of steamed rice), cake, all pies, cookies, deep fried food. I already know what all these foods taste like. Why continue to eat them if they will make me fat? I don’t frequent the VFW weekly fish fry in White Bear Lake, do you? It’s easy to pass up the huge shelf of Pepperidge Farm cookies at Target, even when they are on sale.

So, to stay trim and slim this winter, cut back on those hidden calories. It really isn’t so difficult unless you are one who lives to eat. Then it’s a different story. It’s more efficient to eat less in the winter than to overeat and try to lose 20 pounds in early spring. Think of all the money you will save on groceries and restaurant bills by eating less. You can do some of the ice cream rides next summer without gain or guilt, unless your no-no list has ice cream on it. Think: sleek, spandex, sun and riding fun. See you in the spring.

2006 Waiver Time
By Pete Hawkins, TCBC/LAB Insurance Coordinator

Dear TCBC members: This is a reminder that it’s time once again to sign your yearly Release and Waiver of Liability Form for TCBC. Yearly signing of this form is required by the insurance company that provides our League of American Bicyclists (LAB) liability and supplemental medical coverage for all TCBC members when they participate in scheduled TCBC bicycle rides. Our insurance year runs from Feb. 1 through Jan. 31 of the following year.

Members need only sign one waiver per year, unless they attend a special event wherein all participants must sign a waiver (i.e. the Watermelon Ride). You can find the waiver form on our website under “Documents” (there are two forms, make certain to use the one for members), print it and mail it to our P.O. Box. Alternatively, you can sign one on your next TCBC ride and give it to the leader. All leaders should have the form available on all rides.

Simply put, our LAB insurance policy provides up to $1,000,000 of liability coverage for our club, its officers and Board of Directors, and for members when participating in a TCBC scheduled bicycle ride. It also provides a $10,000 supplemental medical coverage with a $500 deductible that kicks in after your primary medical insurance, if you have it, stops paying for injuries incurred on a TCBC scheduled bicycle ride. Additionally, there is a $5,000 per person accidental death and dismemberment coverage for members on scheduled TCBC rides. If you need further information about our LAB insurance coverage, please contact me.

2006 TCBC Jersey - The Wait is Over!

Thanks to everyone - entrants, members and the committee - for making TCBC’s first ever jersey design contest a success!  To start the process, thirteen original jersey designs were submitted to the Jersey Committee, who had the difficult task of narrowing down the wonderfully creative designs to the four finalists. The group was very impressed with all designs entered; they were thoughtful, colorful and unique. The four finalists’ jersey designs were unveiled at the annual TCBC recognition dinner. The energy over the designs was contagious, there was a lot of excitement and each member seemed to have a favorite design. The voting began. The next morning the four designs were posted on the web site for all members to view and pick their favorite design. None of this could have been accomplished without the ever helpful and talented Phil Doi---thanks so much, Phil!

After counting the 230 votes, we would like to announce that the new design for the 2006 TCBC jersey is shown at http://www.BikeTCBC.org/jersey

Congratulations to Lisa Austin, the jersey designer!!

The Jersey Committee would also like to acknowledge the other three finalists, Susie Anderson, Bob Bryan and Jim Pederson, and thank them for their impressive designs!  Again, thanks to all who participated in any way in this jersey contest!

Minnesota IRONMAN Ride …. 40 Years Strong!
By Jon Ridge, Executive Director, HI-Minnesota AYH

The 40th annual Minnesota IRONMAN Bike Ride returns to Lakeville, MN, on Sunday, April 30. We’re excited to have a birthday in 2006. In 1967 Stan Bezanson started the IRONMAN – 27 entered, only 7 finished. Four decades of milestones, great memories, and personal challenges give this ride a rich history. We like to think of it as one large party – exclusively for bicyclists. While viewed by many as the official kickoff of the Minnesota bike season, we realize many TCBC members have been riding all year. Still, welcome to the IRONMAN and thank you for joining us as either a rider or volunteer.

Hostelling International – Minnesota AYH organized and hosts the IRONMAN. TCBC serves as co-sponsor and partner. Last year 4,600 rode with us. Sunshine helped, but the traditional headwind on the home stretch from Northfield greeted the riders. Weather never seems to stop good riders. Many TCBC members have ridden on more than 20 IRONMAN events, some over 30, and other members have volunteered for nearly the same.

Riders can expect great food and beverages at all our rest stops. Jordan, Belle Plaine, Montgomery, Lonsdale, and Northfield will serve as indoor rest stops to support the 100-mile riders. Routes of 30, 62, and 100 miles are again being offered.

Park Tool USA is back as our title sponsor. Having the world’s premier manufacturer of bike tools headquartered in our own backyard is a plus. Park Tool staff will again support the riders with their BOB trailers in tow. And the PIONEER PRESS has joined us as our media sponsor. A Voler IRONMAN jersey is also available for this 40th anniversary.

OTHER INFO: TCBC members can renew their membership on the IRONMAN registration form. Registration info (on-line and mail-in) can be found at http://www.IronmanBikeRide.org and is linked to the TCBC website. Start and finish are again at Lakeville High School, now called Lakeville North High School. Registration fee is $30. IRONMAN Hotline is 651-251-1495. No safety presentation is planned this year. Riders will be reminded to ride responsibly and within the law.

Minnesota IRONMAN Bike Ride Seeks Volunteers

Mark your calendars. The Minnesota IRONMAN Bike Ride is Sunday, April 30th, in Lakeville for its eighth year. In 2006 the Ironman turns 40....a milestone to celebrate. Registration brochures arrived in riders’ homes in early February. Already cyclists are gearing up for the official beginning of spring...the IRONMAN Ride!

As is true with an event of this magnitude, hundreds of volunteers help ensure the success of the IRONMAN each year. Once again, WE NEED YOU! If you are a returning volunteer, share the fun by recruiting some friends or family members. If you are new to the IRONMAN, we are ready to welcome you. The IRONMAN makes a great service project for church groups, scout troops, and civic clubs too. We strive to provide a fun event for riders and non-riders alike. Following is just a sampling of the many volunteer opportunities available:

REGISTRATION PROCESSING: Join the group on Monday evenings after 5:00 PM to help process rider registrations. The location is the HI-AYH office, 622 Selby Ave, St. Paul. These 'work' parties (actually fun social occasions) will continue until the week of April 17. Bring a friend. No experience necessary. We can train anyone. Call the HI-AYH office at 651-251-1495 for details.

LEAFLET DROP: On Saturday, April 22, volunteers will meet to drive the routes and distribute flyers to notify the residents and businesses of Dakota County, a week in advance, that the IRONMAN will be coming through their communities. Sarah Hartmann, 952-545-6151, will determine a time and meeting place.

RIDER PACKET STUFFING PARTY: Come anytime after 5 PM on WEDNESDAY, April 26, to Hope Lutheran Church, 5728 Cedar Ave (the usual site, in south Minneapolis near Lake Nokomis) and join a jolly bunch of volunteers strolling along the tables and 'stuffing' 5000 rider packets. Bring your own 'rubber finger'. Food, beverages, and hospitality will be provided at this social event.

SATURDAY SETUP: April 29 is a big volunteer work day in Lakeville, starting at 10 AM at Lakeville North High School. We have registration tables to set up, merchandise to sort and fold and bag for each registrant, merchandise tables to set up, supplies to pick up and deliver, etc.

REST STOP SETUP: Starting between 1 and 2 PM, we need lots of help as we set up the rest stops. There are hundreds of details all day in Lakeville, so you'll have plenty to do whenever you come. Lunch and beverages will be provided. The term 'the more the merrier' really applies here. A strong crew helps complete the work that much faster.

DAY OF RIDE VOLUNTEER POSITIONS: We provide a window of support to the riders that starts at 5:30 AM and proceeds nonstop until after 5:30 PM. There are many volunteer opportunities for riders and non-riders alike to share in the excitement of this day long event. Choose a shift, or stay all day. Briefly they include: direct parking, rider registration, post-ride check-in, distribute t-shirts, rest stop worker, route corner marshal, ride marshal (TCBC ride leaders only), first aid certified medic, sag driver and sag co-pilot, ham radio operator, merchandise table and HI silent auction, TCBC booth, and evening pickup.

CLEAN-UP CREW: Exhaustion sets in and a fresh crew of volunteers is being sought this year to help us clean up. You'll be our hero for helping to pack the trucks at Lakeville North HS.

Contact Sarah Hartmann, IRONMAN Volunteer Coordinator, at 952-545-6151, or sarahart@juno.com to request the complete volunteer packet. All volunteers receive a complimentary IRONMAN or IRONWOMAN t-shirt and the 2006 commemorative pint glass. Finally, to request an IRONMAN registration brochure, contact the HI-AYH office at 651-251-1495, or check out the website: http://www.ironmanbikeride.org. You may even register for the ride on-line. We hope to see you at the IRONMAN!

In Brief

NEXT ACTIVITY NEWS DEADLINE will be Monday, March 6.

ANNUAL LEADER FORUM will be Saturday, April 8, from 1:30 – 4 PM at the Brooklyn Center Community Center. Postcards will be sent to all current leaders, but if you are a trained TCBC leader and don’t receive one and want to be an active leader in 2006, just come and attend the Forum. Contact the TCBC Leader Liaisons, Patt Seleen and Pete Hawkins, at leaderliason@biketcbc.org if you have questions or concerns. (Note the misspelling of liaison in the e-mail address.)

TCBC encourages interested members and friends to attend the new Bicycle – Travel and Fitness Expo on March 4 & 5 in the Minneapolis Convention Center. The TCBC booth will be space #914, so be sure to stop by.

POLAR BEAR RIDE on January 1 had 53 riders, the fourth straight year over 50 people. The noon temp was 31 degrees, which makes this year about the third-warmest ride since this event started in 1981. The slush from recent snows created some challenges to navigate. Thanks again to perennial leader Bob Hoffman!

MINNEAPOLIS BIKE PROJECTS: Much has been spent on design and pre-construction. Possibly being done this year: NE Diagonal Trail connecting Roseville to bikeways near the U of M; Bryant Avenue Bikeway; bicycle lanes along some North Minneapolis streets. Some projects will probably be completed in 2007: University of MN trail to connect Bridge 9 to the Transitway near Oak Street; Hiawatha Trail connections near the Metrodome; Cedar Lake Trail from Hiawatha to West River Parkway.

WINTER WEATHER: It was the warmest January in 160-some years in the Twin Cities, with a low temp of 5 degrees, and temps averaged 15 degrees above normal! Ridiculous, with only 2 inches of snow. (How would you like it if July averaged 15 degrees above normal?)

BICYCLING MAGAZINE just listed its choices for the best cycling cities in the United States. For those from 200,000 to 500,000 population, Madison is Best Overall, and it listed Minneapolis for Honorable Mention (and it listed TCBC!). Best Overall is Portland, OR, and Chicago is 2nd best of the cities over one million.

RAIL CRASHES: According to the Federal Railroad Administration, Minnesota is the 12th-worst state in the U.S. for vehicle-train crashes. Bicyclists need to continue to use caution when crossing the LRT tracks in Minneapolis…..

TCBC Annual Recognition Dinner
By Katie Angle

BETTER THAN EVER!

Winter is a time to celebrate the many successes and achievements within the Twin Cities Bicycling Club, made possible by the numerous volunteer hours and talents of its members. We thank you all! The Friday evening event was held in a ballroom at the Sheraton Hotel in Edina, arranged by club member and Sheraton employee Ray Remler. The program began with a social hour, where we were given the chance to try to recognize everyone outside their normal lycra attire. In addition to mingling with friends we had the opportunity to view the four new jersey options and then cast a vote for our favorite. As we got caught up with our fellow biker’s lives, we were able to view a large screen slide show developed by Jim Pederson, which reminded us of those great warm days on the bike with friends on unique routes over the past year. Charles Breer, the evening’s emcee and new President, would later remark to the audience how much smiling we seem to do on our rides!

Recognition began by Charles as we chose our seats at tables named for rides with hosts to make everyone feel welcome. This year we were served a dinner of chicken with roasted red pepper sauce, salad, vegetable, potato, and an alternating dessert of chocolate mousse or NY cheesecake. Charles acknowledged the club’s new members, the Annual Dinner Committee (Kristine Poelzer, Mike Beadles, Perry Broste, Phil Doi, Irene Erickson, Dan Miller, Mary Nelsen, and Tony Stifter), and the Recognition Committee (Charles Breer and Mary Derks.)

It was another huge riding year for TCBC, with 1,112 rides, 119 leaders, and 505,151 total miles ridden by all members. This success was made possible by good weather and dedicated leaders, schedulers, statisticians and organizers. Awards were divided into two types. Ride-related awards consisted of a personally engraved medal (name, mileage, and number of rides) on a ribbon for members who rode 500 or more miles with TCBC. Ride leaders who led four or more rides received recognition and a $20 discount towards the new club jersey. The Best Ride Leaders, which were voted on previously by the general membership, went to Cindy Hanson and Jeff Hofstede for Best NEW Ride Leaders, Herb Schultz and Paul Huntington for Best “C” Ride Leaders and overall BEST Ride Leaders went to Mary Derks (again) for establishing and leading the new Outreach rides, Tony Wanschura (again) for his tailored WI rides and Herb Schultz for leading 92 rides in many different sites. They will each receive a free TCBC jersey, embroidered with “Ride Leader of the Year.”

The top mileage awards, which included a personal trophy and the TCBC traveling plaque, went to repeat winners. Tony Stifter topped all male riders with 10,096 miles and 271 rides ridden. Katie Angle led the women’s category with 6,429 miles. The top number of rides by women went to Patt Seleen with 145 rides. Both Tony and Katie spoke about the leaders who put on all the rides and the enjoyable times that they shared with their fellow riders.

Awards were given to all the VOLUNTEERS who have worked so many hours to help TCBC offer safe and enjoyable rides to its members and also for the support given to special events within the community. The volunteers were acknowledged with a gift certificate to either County Cycles or Erik’s Bike Shop and are listed at the end of this article. The Volunteers of the Year are voted on by the Board members. What a task, to choose the best from the best! This year, two Volunteers of the Year were chosen. In honor of six years as webmaster and the one who got TCBC electronic, Phil Doi was chosen as one of the Volunteers of the Year. Mike Beadles was chosen as the other Volunteer of the Year for his efforts as president during the difficult times after Bahram Daneshvar’s death in January of 2005, as a past leader of WOW, and many, many other activities. Both Phil and Mike will receive a free TCBC jersey embroidered with “Volunteer of the Year”. The evening concluded with more socializing and talk of what else – biking! We then said our good-byes.

THANKS EVERYBODY! YOU MAKE THE DIFFERENCE!!

Some Significant Totals
By Doug Nelson

2005 was the biggest year ever for TCBC and lots of personal and group records were set, including: 165 people over 1000 miles, including 53 women; 72 people over 2000 miles; and 34 were over 3000 miles. We broke the number of yearly rides by nearly 200.

Years over 2000 miles: Sue Blum now has 11 and can tie the record this year if she does it again. Lee Thielman tied for third with 10 years.

Years over 3000 miles: Sue extended her record to 10 years. Tony Stifter is tied for second with 8.

Years over 4000 miles: Tony now has the record to himself with 7. Mike Nizielski is tied for second with 6.

Katie Angle averaged 44 miles per ride and had the fifth-highest women’s total ever. She is the seventh woman to win the mileage award twice, but none has won three.

From 2000-05, six years, Katie leads all women with around 19,800 miles. Susan Evan is second with around 16,300. Liesa, Patt, and Irene are pretty close behind.

Tony S. averaged 37 miles per ride and had the third-highest mileage total ever. He became the fifth man to win two mileage awards. Only Dave Carlson has won three.

From 2000-05, six years, Tony has accumulated around 31,400 miles. Mike Nizielski is second with around 28,500 and no one else is close.

Tony also set a new record with his seventh year doing over 100 rides. Plus, Lee had one of the largest increases in history, gaining more than 6000 miles from 2004 to 2005.

Not much turnover! Of the top 15 men in mileage in 2004, 12 of them were in the top 15 last year. Of the women, 10 of the top 15 in 2004 were in the top 15 again in 2005.
