January 2011

1 SAT 8:00 AM A 100 mi. New Years Day Century. 5th Annual. Depart from Dunn Bros Coffee East Lake Street and W River Road Minneapolis. A Map may be available for this ride as we will ride in the best direction for the wind and winter weather conditions so we may have several options. Group riding is preferred and encouraged. Vehicle support may be available with extra food and drink, but not a sag option and no guarantee that it will be available. We may loop back to the start so you might want to have a change of clothes along in case we are able to change. In extreme winter weather conditions we may shorten the route, but not likely. Bring a cellular phone along in case of mechanical, physical, or mental breakdown. Headlights and tail lights are encouraged as well if you are delayed and may finish at dark. Also plan in advance for a contact person to call if you find you are unable continue the course set before you. 1 SAT 12:15 PM 12 mi. The Polar Bear Ride. Depart from The SW corner of the St. Paul Sears parking lot at I-94 and Marion Street. There can be no better way to spend the first Saturday of the New Year than on our special little event known as the Polar Bear Ride. Indeed, it’s been the place to be on New Year’s Day for at least FORTY years now! Many of us fondly (?) remember the early years when high-tech cycling clothing was itchy old wool from places like Thrifty Outfitters, massive Sorel boots were the norm in winter cycling shoes and state of the art in studded tires meant driving roofing nails through any old rubber that was lying around the garage. As they say, “those were the days”! Riding the Polar Bear nowadays could almost be called comfortable by comparison. So come along with us as we ride in celebration of another new year and see just how much fun it really is! THE DETAILS: We’ll ride down Summit Avenue to the Mississippi and back. As always, we'll lunch at the Original Green Mill on Grand and Hamline during or after the ride. If you would like to celebrate the New Year with us but don't care to ride, come for lunch only at about 1:15 or so. Cross or mountain bikes highly recommended. Severe weather or impassable roads may cause cancellation. If in doubt, call perennial leader Bob Hoffman. See ya next year! Bob Hoffman, 651-430-2676.
