14 SUN BALLET OF THE SWANS, A HIKE, AND A DINNER. Please join us for an awe-inspiring display of nature as the tundra swans make their annual migratory return to Rieck’s Lake near Alma, Wisconsin. Meet at Sears in St. Paul at 9 AM. Take 94 to the Marion Street exit, proceed north to Sears, and park in the southwest corner of the lot. We’ll consider carpool opportunities for the 80-mile scenic drive (maps provided) to Alma on the Mississippi. These majestic creatures with their seven-foot-plus wingspans congregate by the hundreds (sometimes in the thousands!) on this beautiful lake from late October through November. Their numbers peak sometime in November, and with any luck we’ll catch it. We may see bald eagles soaring over the bluffs surrounding the lake as well. An observation deck with spotting scopes awaits our arrival and volunteer naturalists will enlighten us on the tundra swans and their journey. Then we will proceed three miles to Alma for a nice lunch before embarking on a short hike up (a mile or less) and back down the 500-foot bluff to Buena Vista Park. (You can get there by car if you prefer.) It’s a view to behold from the top. Last year we were astonished to gaze eye level at bald eagles within feet of our vantage point! For the truly ambitious among us, we’ll continue the hike at the Old Alma Cemetary and Mossy Hollow (up another bluff) at the south end of town. If you desire less strenuous pursuits, you might check out Lock and Dam #4 or explore the town on a walking tour. And last but not least we’ll settle into some fine dining at either the Harbor View Café in Pepin (cash or check only) or “The Norton’s” Restaurant near Bay City on our return home. Dress warm and don’t forget your hiking shoes and binoc’s. RSVP’s are not necessary but would be appreciated. Come along and play, this will be fun! (Bob Hoffman)
