Cruisin' The Coulees Overnight

The hills beckon... Once again, we'll celebrate spring on the serene back roads of Wisconsin Coulee Country. We've kept the classic routes of past years. The Saturday ride of 60 (or 57 less hilly) miles will depart from Pepin, WI at 10:30 AM. Pepin is about 70 scenic miles southeast of the Twin Cities on WI Hwy 35. In Pepin, turn right on Prairie St. Go two blocks to 1st St. Turn left and park straight ahead in the lot along the R.R. tracks opposite the Pickle Factory Restaurant. After the ride, we'll clean up and search out our customary gourmet dinner. Details later in the online TCBC Newsgroups. We'll stay overnight in Pepin at The Pepin Motel (715) 442-2012. Do a web search of Pepin and Alma WI. for further lodging possibilities. The traditional Sunday breakfast (very good!) will be in Alma, WI. (about 15 miles south of Pepin) at the Pier 4 Cafe, 600 North Main St (Hwy 35). It's located one block north of the Lock and Dam #4 parking lot. Please join us there around 8:00 AM.

The Sunday ride of 62 or 42 miles will depart Alma from the Lock and Dam lot at 9:30 AM. Please park on the street, not in the lot. Some long climbs will be encountered, but the incredible views and glorious descents make it worth every bit of effort. Come along and you'll see why. Day trippers most welcome!
Leaders: Bob Hoffman, Rebecca Lawrence and Tony Wanschura.

June 1-3

Tour of Lakes 2007

In keeping with the all-important theme of, “It’s never too early to plan a bike trip”, mark your calendars for June 1-3, 2007 for a weekend of biking in the beautiful Brainerd Lakes area. The weekend’s rides will consist of the Tour of Lakes (TOL) outreach ride on Saturday, June 2 and TCBC “A/B” and “B” rides on Friday afternoon and Sunday.

TOL is sponsored by the Paul Bunyan Cyclists and offers mileage options of approx 40 and 70. It is known for its varied and plentiful rest stops---think “rolling buffet”! As a general rule, we try to ride together as a group for a portion of the ride as it’s a lot of fun to be part of the long train of TCBC cyclists rolling down the road, all in our club jerseys!   Note that the registration deadline for the ride is May 1; TOL does NOT accept registrations after that date. The format of this year’s trip will be very similar to that of the past two years in that we will .........

June 1-3

Iowa’s Cedar Valley Nature Trail Ride

Enjoy the Iowa’s Cedar Valley Nature trail, a 51-mile paved/crushed limestone trail on a former railroad line between Evansdale and Hiawatha (basically, between Waterloo and Cedar Rapids), long known as one of Iowa’s prettiest and best-loved trails. The well-groomed trail offers a variety of scenery, from majestic overhanging trees, to limestone outcroppings to cornfields to the fast-flowing Cedar River alongside the trial. (The Web site at www.cedarvalleytrail.com can provide a wealth of information.)

The trail has connections to well-developed city trail systems in both Cedar Rapids and Waterloo/ Cedar Falls; both cities offer plenty of entertainment opportunities for après-biking activities, including touring the Amana Colonies near Cedar Rapids.

Waterloo/Cedar Falls is approximately 215 miles south of the Twin Cities. (Follow I35 south for about 135 miles to US18, and travel east on US18 for about 35 miles to US 218. Follow US 218 about 45 miles to Waterloo. Continue south on US218 and follow the signs to I380 south to Cedar Rapids.) Trailheads are a little tricky to find; we recommend downloading the trailhead maps at the URLs below from the Web site. Leaders: Don Picard; Herb Schultz,  Come for 1, 2 or all three days.

Weˇ¦ll also wind our way through the hills and valleys of the Kickapoo River Valley, enjoying the scenic quiet country lanes with canopies of trees overhead in their full autumn glory. These roads are amongst the most beautiful in Wisconsin & Minnesota that we've ridden on--we hope you can join us! more

Cruisin' the Coulees Overnight

SAT 10:30 AM & SUN 9:30 AM A/B

Once again, we'll play in the Fall colors along the magnificent back roads in Wisconsin Coulee Country. These roads are truly spectacular with a very high "fun factor". The Saturday ride options of 74, 60 (or 57 less hilly) miles will depart from Pepin, WI at 10:30 AM. After the ride, we'll clean up and then sit down to a wonderful dinner. Details of this dinner will come later in the online TCBC Newsgroups. We'll stay overnight in Pepin at The Pepin Motel (715) 442-2012. Do a web search of Pepin, WI. or Wabasha, MN. for further lodging possibilities. On Sunday, you'll have options of 82, 70 or 42 miles departing from the Lock and Dam lot in Alma at 9:30 AM. Please park on the street, not in the lot. After the final awe-inspiring descent back into Alma, we'll gather for coffee/ice cream treats at Fire and Ice across from the dam. The emphasis for this weekend is on group riding, NOT speed. Over the last three years the main groups' average has been in the 14 to 15 mph range. We'll stop for a sit down lunch both days. There are hills to climb for sure, but always a fun descent as well. No Fear!!! YOU can do these rides. If you can't participate both days, just grab a friend and carpool down for one day or the other. It's an easy and scenic drive from the cities. Bob Hoffman, Rebecca Lawrence and Tony Wanschura.

Natchez Trace Parkway

The 444-mile Natchez Trace National Parkway commemorates an ancient trail that connected southern portions of the Mississippi River, through Alabama, to salt licks in today’s central Tennessee. We’ll pedal down this designated bike route from Nashville, Tennessee to Natchez, Mississippi and experience its rich history along the way.

Travel and accommodations logistics limit our group to 12 people. We will ride for 7 days, averaging 64 miles/day at a B pace through scenic, rolling, southern countryside. Indoor lodging for the group, arranged by the ride leaders, includes B&Bs and hotels. We will travel from the Twin Cities to Nashville by van, hauling bikes and luggage in a trailer. The van and trailer will accompany us on our ride and will be our sag/shuttle/lunch break vehicle. The $800/person cost includes round-trip transportation from the Twin Cities to the Natchez Trace for you, your bike, and your gear; 10 nights lodging; 6 breakfasts plus food and drink while riding. A $200 deposit will be required at sign-up or September 14th, and full payment will be due no later than October 12th. We will depart the Twin Cities Friday p.m., October 19th and return Monday p.m., October 29th. Watch for additional information about this trip in the September and October TCBC NEWS.
