Bicycling 101: Helmet Fit

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall: Whose Helmet Fits Best of All?

by Kristine Poelzer, TCBC Ride Leader

Take a minute to check out your helmet's fit in the mirror and make a few adjustments for proper safety protection.
  1. The front is almost touching your eyebrows.
  2. The helmet is level across the top of your head.
  3. The side buckles are right below your earlobes.
  4. The side straps straddle your ears.
  5. The chin strap is fastened tight enough to allow only ONE of your fingers to squeeze between it and your skin.

If your helmet:
  • Saved your brain once in a crash, then it did its job, and it's time to retire it to the trash and buy your head a new one.
  • Was purchased over five years ago, get an opinion about getting a new one to protect you.  If over ten years ago, you are likely overdue for a new helmet.
  • Makes your head really hot even when the weather isn't really hot, then count the number of vents on your helmet, and go buy yourself a helmet with more vents in it and sweat wicking pads to keep you cooler.
  • Gives you a "bad hair day" look, then bring along a great-looking baseball cap to cover your hair after the ride.
